Heramba Chandra College

Heramba Chandra College, popularly known as South City Day, is located in Kolkata, West Bengal, and shares its premises with Sivanath Sastri College (South City Morning) and Prafulla Chandra College (South City Evening). The institution began in 1879 as the City School, and by 1881 it was raised to the rank of a college when F.A. classes started. B.A. classes were introduced in 1884, making it a first-grade college within five years of its founding, and a Law Department for the B.L. standard was added in 1885. It was first housed in an old building before moving to 13 Mirzapur Street (now Surya Sen Street). M.A. classes were taught for some years but later abolished due to new Calcutta University regulations. In January 1905, the college came under the City College Institution, now known as the Brahmo Samaj Education Society, whose aim is to promote education for the mind, heart, and body on a Theistic basis. A new building was constructed in 1917 at Amherst Street (now Raja Rammohan Sarani). The college is now situated at 23/49 Gariahat Road, near Rabindra Sarobar lake, and features the first commerce lab in West Bengal along with two well-stocked libraries. Notable alumni include actors, a cricketer, a politician, and a filmmaker.
