The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) is a medical school located in Pondicherry, India, and is an Institute of National Importance under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. Its origins trace back to the École de Médecine de Pondichéry, established in 1823 during French rule, later renamed Medical College, Pondicherry after India's takeover in 1956. In 1964, it was renamed JIPMER in honor of Jawaharlal Nehru by President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. The institute was upgraded to an Institution of National Importance in 2008 through an act of Parliament, allowing it to award its own degrees; previously it was affiliated with Pondicherry University. The campus spans 195 acres in Gorimedu, housing the medical college, hospital blocks, hostels, and other facilities. JIPMER admits 249 undergraduate and 200 postgraduate students annually through entrance exams like NEET and INI-CET. It also operates a Regional Cancer Centre offering free cancer treatment and provides advanced medical services in various specialties.
