Institute of Plasma Research (IPR)
The Institute for Plasma Research (IPR) is a public research institute in India dedicated to research in plasma science, covering basic plasma physics, magnetically confined hot plasmas, and industrial plasma technologies. It is India's leading plasma physics organization and hosts the country's largest tokamak, SST-1. IPR plays a major scientific and technical role in India's partnership in the international fusion energy initiative ITER, and is part of the IndiGO consortium for gravitational wave research. It is an autonomous body funded by the Department of Atomic Energy. The institute originated from the Plasma Physics Programme (PPP) initiated by the Government of India in 1982, which evolved into the autonomous Institute for Plasma Research in 1986 under the Department of Science and Technology. Tokamak experiments began with the commissioning of ADITYA in 1989, and a 1995 decision led to development of the superconducting steady-state tokamak SST-1. The institute later came under the Department of Atomic Energy. It is located on the banks of the Sabarmati River in Gandhinagar district, near Ahmedabad. IPR has remote campuses including the Centre of Plasma Physics (CPP-IPR) and ITER-India, and its Facilitation Centre for Industrial Plasma Technologies (FCIPT) works with industries on plasma-based technologies.
