Zakir Husain Delhi College

Zakir Husain Delhi College, originally founded as Madrasa Ghaziuddin Khan in 1696 by Ghaziuddin Khan, a Mughal general, is the oldest existing educational institution in India. After the madrasa closed in 1790-91, an oriental college was established at the site in 1792, and it was later reorganized as the Anglo Arabic College by the British East India Company in 1828 to include English education. The college was renamed Zakir Husain College in 1975 by the Indira Gandhi government, honoring Dr. Zakir Husain, and has been run by the Zakir Husain Memorial Trust since then. It moved to its present building outside Turkman Gate in 1986, while the old Madrasa Ghaziuddin complex still houses a hostel. The ASI declared it a heritage monument in 2002, and a college archive was established in 2008. The college is a constituent of the University of Delhi, accredited with NAAC 'A' grade, and offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in sciences, humanities, and commerce, including unique BA (Hons) courses in Arabic and Persian. It also hosts the Mirza Mehmood Begg Library, Salman Gani Hashmi Auditorium, and organizes the annual Zakir Husain Memorial Lecture since 2006.
