Jawaharlal Nehru University

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is a public research university located in Delhi, India, established in 1969 by an act of parliament and named after Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister. G. Parthasarathy was its first vice-chancellor, and Prof. Moonis Raza served as Founder Chairman and Rector. In June 1970, the Indian School of International Studies merged with JNU, becoming its School of International Studies. The President of India serves as the university's visitor, with a chancellor as nominal head and a vice-chancellor as executive head. Its academic departments are organized into 20 Schools and Centres, and it has granted recognition to various defence and research institutions, including the National Defence Academy and Central Drug Research Institute. JNU has academic collaborations with 71 universities worldwide and awards MA degrees in Public Management to IAS trainee officers. The university received the Visitor's Award for Best University in 2017. It is ranked 555th globally and 130th in Asia by QS World University Rankings, and second in India by NIRF in 2025. JNU also has an elected student body called JNUSU, which faced a temporary ban on elections between 2008 and 2012.
