Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering & Technology (CIPET), Madurai

The Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering and Technology (CIPET), formerly called the Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology, is an autonomous institution functioning under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, Government of India. It was established in 1968 at Chennai in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the International Labor Organization (ILO). CIPET operates 43 centres across the country, including one in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, with nine more centres being set up to serve the polymer and allied industries. The institute was founded to develop skilled manpower in various disciplines of Plastics Engineering and Technology, as no similar institution existed in India at the time. CIPET offers specialized academic and skill development training programs in Polymer Science and Technology, aiming to produce qualified human resources with entrepreneurial qualities for the polymer and allied industries. It also provides technology support through consultancy, design, tooling, plastics processing, testing, quality assurance, and inspection services, along with dedicated R&D wings for developing new polymeric materials and applications. Admission to CIPET centres is conducted through a joint entrance examination held annually.
