University of Jammu, Jammu Tawi

The University of Jammu, popularly called Jammu University (JU), was established in 1969 through an act of the state legislature that split the former Jammu and Kashmir University into separate University of Jammu and University of Kashmir. It is accredited A++ by NAAC and was the first university in India to receive ISO-9001 certification. Its main campus lies at the foothills of Trikuta on the banks of the Tawi River at an altitude of 1030 ft, housing teaching departments, a health centre, guest house, post office, bank, bookshop, hostels, and canteens. A second, older campus spans 10.5 acres nearby with residential quarters and hostels. The university also has seven off-site campuses at Bhaderwah, Kishtwar, Poonch, Reasi, Ramnagar, Kathua, and Udhampur. It comprises 36 academic departments across 11 faculties, offering more than 50 programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and affiliates 157 colleges. The Lieutenant Governor of the Jammu and Kashmir UT serves as chancellor. The central Dhanvantri Library, a four-storied building of 60,000 square feet, holds about five lakh books and 276 periodicals. In 2024, NIRF ranked the university 50th among Indian universities and 87th overall. Notable alumni include Ghulam Nabi Azad, Justice T. S. Thakur, and Nirmal Singh.
