ST. XAVIER'S UNIVERSITY, KOLKATA
St. Xavier's University Kolkata is a Jesuit university situated in New Town, Kolkata, India. It was established in February 2017 by the West Bengal government as the State University of New Town Kolkata (SXUK) and was formally inaugurated in July 2017 by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Lakshmi Mittal, CEO of ArcelorMittal. Though administered by the same Jesuit community that runs St. Xavier's College, Kolkata, the college itself—founded in 1860—remains independent and functions autonomously under the University of Calcutta rather than being affiliated with this university. The idea for the university originated from a 2011 ten-year plan called Vision 2020, devised by the St. Xavier's College Alumni Association under Father John Felix Raj. Mamata Banerjee invited the college to open a university in 2012, land was purchased in 2013, and the West Bengal Legislative Assembly passed the St. Xavier's University, Kolkata Act 2016 in December 2016, receiving gubernatorial assent in January 2017. Father Felix Raj became the university's first vice-chancellor in July 2017. The university may have constituent Jesuit colleges in West Bengal, sponsored by the St. Xavier's College Kolkata Educational Trust.
