THE MADRAS SANSKRIT COLLEGE AND SSV PATASALA

The Madras Sanskrit College is a government-aided institution located in Mylapore, Chennai, established in 1906 by the eminent jurist and philanthropist V. Krishnaswamy Iyer. In 2017, the college launched a digital campus to disseminate and teach Sanskrit through an online platform. Its flagship academic programmes include the Sanskrit Prak-Siromani (Foundation Course), Sanskrit Siromani Madhyama (equivalent to a BA), and Sanskrit Siromani (equivalent to an MA), all affiliated with the University of Madras and offered under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). The college does not charge tuition fees for these core programmes, though it also offers diploma and part-time certificate courses in Sanskrit. Beyond teaching, the college conducts research into various Hindu texts, Indology, Sanskrit grammar, and the Vedas, and offers MPhil and PhD programmes, with research scholar selection following Madras University norms. The Kuppuswami Sastri Research Institute, founded in 1944, is also situated on the same campus, further strengthening the institution's research profile in Sanskrit and related fields.
