Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports, commonly known as the National Institute of Sports (NIS), is the academic wing of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and is described as Asia's largest sports institute, located in the city of Patiala. It is also home to India's first sports museum. The institute was founded on 7 May 1961 and was renamed Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports in January 1973. It was merged with SAI in 1987. Spread over 268 acres, NIS is housed in the Old Moti Bagh Palace, which belonged to the erstwhile royal family of Patiala State and was purchased by the Government of India after Indian independence. The National Institute of Sports Museum houses memorabilia such as a 95 kg hass used by The Great Gama, Major Dhyan Chand's gold medal from the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, and PT Usha's shoes from the 1986 Seoul Asiad. The institute comprises several departments, including sports medicine, exercise physiology, sports biochemistry, sports anthropometry, sports psychology, sports nutrition, general theory and methods of training, and biomechanics.
