Nizam College, Basheerbagh

Nizam College, located near Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium in Basheerbagh, Hyderabad, Telangana, was established in 1887 during the reign of Mir Mahbub Ali Khan, Asaf Jah VI, through the amalgamation of the Hyderabad School (Noble School) and Madarsa-I-Aliya. The college originally occupied a palace belonging to Nawab Safdar Jung Musheer-ud-Daulah Fakhrul-ul-Mulk II, a noble of Hyderabad, which was later gifted to the college administration by Paigah Nawab Mulk Fakrul Bahadur. Its founder, Syed Hussain Bilgrami (Nawab Imad-ul-Mulk), appointed Dr. Aghorenath Chattopadhyay as the first principal. Initially affiliated to the University of Madras for 60 years, the college became a constituent college of Osmania University on 19 February 1947. It celebrated its centenary in 1987 and was granted autonomous status by the UGC in 1988–89 at the undergraduate level, a status it continues to hold. The college is NAAC accredited and has received CPE (College with Potential for Excellence) status from the UGC.
