CMS College Kottayam
CMS College Kottayam, founded in 1817 by the Church Missionary Society of England, is regarded as one of the earliest Western-style colleges in India, along with Presidency College Calcutta. It was patronised by Col. John Munro, and Reverend Benjamin Bailey served as its first principal, teaching English, Greek, and Latin. Located on a hillock site since 1838 in Kottayam, Kerala, the college offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in arts, commerce, and sciences, along with vocational degree programs. It is affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University and has Autonomous status from the University Grants Commission. In 1999, it received five-star accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, and in 2004 was recognized as a College with Potential for Excellence by the UGC. The college has 17 undergraduate and 18 postgraduate departments, with six research centres and PhD programs in Botany, Zoology, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English, and Commerce. Managed by the CSI Madhya Kerala Diocese, its Managing Council includes thirteen members. The college is ranked 92nd among colleges in India by the NIRF in 2024 and counts notable alumni such as K. R. Narayanan, K. T. Thomas, and Oommen Chandy.
