Burdwan Medical College

Burdwan Medical College is a public hospital and medical college situated in the town of Burdwan, Purba Bardhaman, West Bengal. Its origins trace back to 13 July 1907, when the decision was made to build a hospital in Burdwan. On 9 November 1910, the Frazer Hospital was inaugurated with 127 indoor beds, and this institution was later converted into a medical school in 1921, named Ronaldshay Medical School. In 1969, it was renamed Burdwan University Medical College and affiliated with the University of Burdwan, after the foundation stone was laid by the then health minister Nani Bhattacharya. The college faced infrastructural challenges, causing early batches to be shifted to Kolkata. It was taken over by the Government of West Bengal on 4 August 1976 and renamed Burdwan Medical College. The college remained under the academic jurisdiction of Burdwan University until 2003, when it came under the West Bengal University of Health Sciences. The campus spans approximately 253 acres. It offers MBBS and postgraduate courses, with an annual undergraduate intake of 200 students since 2019, and also trains postgraduate and super-specialty students. Admission is based on merit through the NEET-UG examination, and the college is recognised by the National Medical Commission.
