Vidyasagar Metropolitan College

Vidyasagar Metropolitan College traces its origins to the Commerce Department of Vidyasagar College (originally Metropolitan Institution, founded in 1872 by Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar). The Commerce Department, introduced in 1922 and considered the oldest commerce teaching department in India, grew rapidly in faculty and student strength. Due to this growth, a separate wing devoted to commerce teaching in evening hours was established in 1951. In 1961, this evening section emerged as an independent entity, receiving its own Governing Body and affiliation from the University of Calcutta, and was given the name Vidyasagar Metropolitan College. The college is located in the same area as the main Vidyasagar College campus in North Kolkata, connected internally near College Street, alongside the Vidyasagar College for Women. As a night college, it functions as part of the broader Vidyasagar College institutional complex, which also includes a main heritage campus, a Bidhan Sarani campus, and a Bidhannagar campus specialized for post-graduate studies. The parent institution's broader academic framework includes affiliation to Calcutta University, oversight by UGC, and accreditation by NAAC, operating under a semester-based CBCS system.
