North Bengal University, Darjeeling

Darjeeling Hills University (DHU) is a public state university in Darjeeling, West Bengal, India, established through The Greenfield University Act, 2018, by the Government of West Bengal. The act was amended in 2019, renaming the institution from Greenfield University to Darjeeling Hills University. The university became active in November 2021 with the appointment of its first Vice Chancellor, Subires Bhattacharyya, who also served as Vice Chancellor of the University of North Bengal. Subsequent leadership included Om Prakash Mishra, Prem Poddar, and Tejimala Gurung Nag, who became the first regular Vice Chancellor in January 2025. Administrative operations began in 2021, initially managed by University of North Bengal officers until March 2024, after which faculty from Darjeeling Government College took over. The university's main campus is being built in Jogighat, Mungpoo, Darjeeling, while classes are currently held at the ITI Building in Bhasmey, Mungpoo, with full on-campus classes starting in April 2024. It offers postgraduate degrees in English, History, Mass Communication, Mathematics, Nepali, and Political Science. The university is recognized under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956, with inclusion in the UGC List of Universities dated September 30, 2022.
