National Institute of Technology, Rourkela
NIT Rourkela was established as Regional Engineering College (REC) Rourkela on 15 August 1961, with land provided by Chief Minister Biju Patnaik and its foundation stone laid by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. It was granted autonomy in 2002 and now functions under the Ministry of Education. The campus, about 650 acres, is located at the eastern end of Rourkela, bordered by small mountains, and the institute has also built an extension centre in Bhubaneswar for distance learning, placements, and startup activities. The Biju Pattanaik Central Library, functional since 1965, holds about 85,000 books and 18,000 back volumes of periodicals, with access to over 2000 online journals. The institute offers twenty departments providing B.Tech., B.Arch, dual degrees, M.Tech., M.Sc., MBA, and PhD programs. It was ranked 1001–1200 globally by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings in 2023, 19th among Indian engineering colleges by NIRF in 2024, and 317th in Asia by QS World University Rankings in 2025.
