INDIAN MARITIME UNIVERSITY, VISAKHAPATNAM
Indian Maritime University (IMU) is a public central university in India functioning under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. It was established by the Indian Maritime University Act 2008, on 14 November 2008, bringing together seven pre-existing teaching and research institutes that had previously operated under the Ministry of Shipping. One of these legacy institutes, the National Ship Design & Research Centre, Visakhapatnam, was subsumed into IMU to form its Visakhapatnam campus. IMU has All-India jurisdiction, with its headquarters located in Chennai, and operates six campuses in total: Chennai, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai Port, Navi Mumbai, and Visakhapatnam. The university is recognized as a leading national institution for maritime education, commercial shipping, marine engineering, and maritime administration, and is regarded as training ground for merchant navy officers. Admission to IMU programs is conducted through the IMUCET entrance examination, held annually across the country. As of 2025, IMU had 21 affiliated colleges offering various maritime-related academic programs.
