NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF SECURITIES MARKETS

The National Institute of Securities Markets (NISM) is a public trust established in 2006 by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), the regulator of Indian securities markets. It operates under the ownership of SEBI, which itself functions under India's Ministry of Finance. NISM was created following a proposal in the February 2006 Budget Speech by then Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram, aiming to authorize SEBI to establish an institute for teaching, training intermediaries in securities markets, and promoting research. NISM is an autonomous body governed by its Board of Governors, with an International Advisory Council providing strategic guidance. Its activities are carried out under six schools, including the School for Securities Education (SSE), which offers programs such as a Post-Graduate Program in Investments & Securities Markets, an LL.M. in Investment and Securities Laws, and various postgraduate diplomas and certificates. NISM also administers a wide range of certification examinations covering areas like currency derivatives, mutual funds, securities operations, investment advisory, and commodity derivatives, and it operates the NISM Skills Registry, a centralized database for verifying certified candidates.
