Kathir College of Education

Kathir College of Engineering is an engineering college situated on Neelambur Avinashi Road in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India, roughly eight kilometres from Coimbatore Junction railway station. It has been approved by the All India Council for Technical Education and is affiliated to Anna University, Chennai. The college was established in 2008 under the patronage of the Lamika Educational and Charitable Trust, under the ownership of E.S. Kathir, son of K.A. Sengottaiyan, a former Minister of School Education in the Government of Tamil Nadu. The institution offers five undergraduate and five postgraduate courses. In 2016, the college faced criticism after a 22-year-old student died by suicide in one of its hostels, alleging in his suicide note that hostel staff had harassed him and that facilities were inadequate. The student's mother said no college staff informed her of her son's death, and that she instead learned of it from other students. Police sought to question several staff members who had absconded. The incident sparked student protests, joined by the Students' Federation of India and the All India Students' Federation, during which canteen furniture was damaged and demonstrations were held outside a government hospital.
