It holds the distinction of being the first girls' college in South Kolkata and the third oldest girls' college in West Bengal. The institution originated in 1922 as part of the Beltala Girls Education Society, functioning as a morning section of Beltala School, and was founded as an independent college in 1932 by a group of lawyers led by Peary Mohan Chatterjee. The society was chaired by freedom fighter Deshbandhu Chitta Ranjan Das, with Chatterjee serving as secretary. The college aimed to provide higher education to girls from middle-income families.
