INDIAN STATISTICAL INSTITUTE, TEZPUR
The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) is a premier and internationally acclaimed Indian research, teaching and training institute headquartered in Kolkata, India, with centers in Chennai, Bengaluru, New Delhi and Tezpur. Established in 1931, it was declared an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India under the Indian Statistical Institute Act, 1959, and functions under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. Its origins trace back to the Statistical Laboratory at Presidency College, Kolkata, founded by P.C. Mahalanobis. ISI's primary activities are research and training in statistics, and the development of theoretical statistics and its applications in natural and social sciences. Key research areas include statistics, mathematics, theoretical computer science, information science, and mathematical economics. Besides degree courses, ISI offers diploma and certificate courses, special diploma programs for international students through ISEC, and specialized training for probationary officers of the Indian Statistical Service in collaboration with the CSO. Until 1959, ISI was associated with the University of Calcutta, after which the Indian Statistical Institute Act authorized it to independently grant degrees and diplomas in statistics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative economics, and related fields, funded by the Central Government of India.
