Alagappa Chettiar Government College of Engineering and Technology, Karaikudi

Alagappa Chettiar Government College of Engineering and Technology (ACGCET-Karaikudi) was founded on 21 July 1952 by RM. Alagappa Chettiar under the Alagappa Chettiar Educational Trust, starting with Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical and Electronics Engineering under the University of Madras. The foundation for its main building was laid by President Rajendra Prasad in 1953. In 1966 the institution was transferred to the Government of Tamil Nadu, and it became autonomous in 2009. Over the years it added Electronics and Communication Engineering (1969), M.E. in Microwave and Optical Engineering (1983), M.C.A. (1988), B.E. in Computer Science and Engineering (2001), and B.Tech in Information Technology (2025). It is currently affiliated with Anna University, Chennai (from 2012) and is part of the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP). The college was recognized as the best engineering college in Tamil Nadu for 2006–07. Campus facilities include a Non Resident Students Centre, separate hostels for boys and girls, sports facilities including a 400m track and indoor stadium, a cooperative store established in 1956, a dispensary, an auditorium (Dewan Bahadur Murugappa Hall) seating 600, and a post office. Various student associations, including Leo Club and Rotaract Club, operate on campus, and the institution manages Anna University's lateral entry counseling process.
