Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education

Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) is a National Centre of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), based in Mumbai, India. Its broad goals are to promote equity and excellence in science and mathematics education, from the primary school to undergraduate college level, and to encourage the growth of scientific literacy in India. HBCSE carries out activities under three broad categories: research and development; teacher orientation and science popularisation; and Olympiads and other students' nurture programmes. It is India's nodal centre for Olympiad programmes in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and astronomy, and also runs the National Initiative on Undergraduate Science (NIUS). HBCSE operates a graduate school in science and mathematics education, where students work toward a Ph.D. in Science Education, a degree awarded by TIFR (Deemed University). The institute has also achieved notable results in international competitions, such as at the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad, where an Indian student won a gold medal and India secured its best-ever team ranking.
