SATYENDRA NATH BOSE NATIONAL CENTRE FOR BASIC SCIENCES

S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences (SNBNCBS) is an autonomous research institute under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, located in Salt Lake, Kolkata, West Bengal. Named after Indian scientist Satyendra Nath Bose, it was established in 1986, with Chanchal Kumar Majumdar serving as its founder director. The institute focuses mainly on Ph.D. research, and since 2001 has offered an Integrated Ph.D. (M.Sc.+Ph.D.) program, with the M.Sc. degree awarded by the University of Calcutta (formerly by West Bengal University of Technology). Ph.D. theses can be submitted to Jadavpur University, the University of Calcutta, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology, or other eligible universities. The institute has collaborations with IIT Bombay, IISER Kolkata, and IFW Dresden for joint research and doctoral programs in areas like quantum information, materials science, and astrophysics. It commissioned the PARAM Rudra Supercomputer in 2024 and inaugurated the Panchet Hill Observatory in January 2025. Innovations include AJO-Neo, a device for neonatal jaundice screening, and PathGennie, a computational tool for drug discovery.
