KING GEORGE MEDICAL UNIVERSITY

King George's Medical University (KGMU) is a public medical university located in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India. Originally founded as King George's Medical College in 1911 to commemorate King George V's 1905 visit to India, it was initially affiliated with the University of Allahabad until 1921, after which it became a constituent college of the University of Lucknow. In 1983 the Uttar Pradesh government took over the college, later repealing this in 1998 and returning it to the University of Lucknow. In 2002, the college was separated from the University of Lucknow and elevated to the status of a state university, initially named Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University, before being renamed King George's Medical University in 2003. The name changed again in 2007 and 2012 due to shifts in the ruling political party, eventually settling on King George Medical University. The university includes a Dental Faculty established in 1949, which briefly became a separate university before reverting to a faculty. KGMU has around 1250 undergraduate and 450 postgraduate students, admitting about 250 students annually to its MBBS program. It has produced numerous notable alumni, including recipients of the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri, and BC Roy awards.
