National Institute of Technology, Calicut

The National Institute of Technology Calicut, also known as NIT-C, is a public technical university situated 22 kilometres northeast of Kozhikode, Kerala, on the Kozhikode–Mukkam Road. Founded in 1961 as Regional Engineering College Calicut (CREC), it was the ninth such college established in India and the first during the Third Five-Year Plan period. It was initially affiliated with Kerala University until Calicut University was formed in 1963. The institute moved to its permanent campus of 120 hectares in 1963. Over the decades, it expanded its academic offerings, introducing postgraduate courses in 1987 and later becoming a lead institute under the World Bank-funded Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme in 2002. In June 2002, the Ministry of Human Resource Development granted it NIT status, providing academic and administrative autonomy. The National Institutes of Technology Act of May 2007 declared it an Institute of National Importance. The institute is fully residential, with 13 hostels housing about 4,500 students, and features sports facilities including a gymnasium, swimming pool, and cricket ground where Ranji Trophy matches have been played. It also hosts a supercomputer and a dedicated nanotechnology department.
