Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University , Chennai
The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University (TNMGRMU) is a government medical university situated in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. It is regarded as one of the premier medical universities in India and is the second largest health sciences university in the country. The university is named after M. G. Ramachandran, a former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Its origins trace back to 1983, when a high-level committee proposed establishing a separate medical university in Tamil Nadu. The Tamil Nadu Medical University Act, 1987, received presidential assent on 24 September 1987, and the university began functioning in July 1988. In 1991, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi renamed it after M. G. Ramachandran through a further legislative act. Before this, all health science degrees in Tamil Nadu were awarded by the University of Madras. The university is the only institution in Tamil Nadu authorized to affiliate new medical and paramedical colleges, whether government- or self-financed, and to award degrees. It is governed by a chancellor (the Governor of Tamil Nadu) and a pro-chancellor (the state's health minister), with a vice-chancellor serving as the chief academic and administrative officer. The university has future plans to build a 500-bed hospital near the Raj Bhavan campus.
