Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies (SIMS), Pune, was established on February 8, 1993, by Dr. S. B. Mujumdar, initially operating from Symbiosis Pre-Primary School premises. Its first director was Prof. A. Balasubramanian. In the early 2000s, under Defence Minister George Fernandes, the government granted 4 acres of Defence land in Khadki Cantonment for a dedicated campus, inaugurated after 22 months of construction and designed by architect Razzak Sheikh. The institute became a Public Private Partnership between Symbiosis and the Ministry of Defence in 2002, with its flagship MBA primarily for Defence Personnel and dependents, alongside seats for civilians. Admission is based on SNAP scores. SIMS is ISO 9001:2015 certified, UGC approved, and NAAC accredited with Grade 'A++'. In 2008, it became a constituent of Symbiosis International University, integrating diploma programs into a comprehensive MBA with specializations in HR, Marketing, Finance, and Operations. The campus houses 600 students in separate hostels with amenities like a swimming pool and gym, along with an academic block featuring a 400-seat auditorium. SIMS hosts events like the Global Leaders' Summit, SIMSARC research conference, and hosted TEDxSIUKirkee in 2019. It is currently headed by Maj Gen (Dr.) Rohit Bakshi (Retd), who became Director in June 2025.
