J. B. Roy State Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital, located in Kolkata, West Bengal, was founded on 10 February 1916 by Ayurvedic physician and philanthropist Jamini Bhushan Ray as the Ashtanga Ayurveda Vidyalaya. It began in a rented house at 29 Fariapukur Street with twelve students and three teachers, offering free tuition, board and lodging. The institution aimed to modernise Ayurvedic education by replacing the traditional guru–shishya system with organised teaching and clinical training. In 1919, it was reorganised under a public trust, with Gananath Sen as Chairman of its Working Committee and Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee as Chairman of its Board of Trustees. The college relocated in 1921 to larger premises on Shyamabazar Bridge Road, and in 1925 Mahatma Gandhi laid the foundation stone of its permanent campus on Raja Dinendra Street. The new hospital, with fifty charitable beds, was inaugurated in 1927. In 1964, the college and its associated hospitals were transferred from private trust management to the Government of West Bengal. The institution is affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences, recognised by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine, and offers the Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery degree, operating teaching hospitals at Raja Dinendra Street and Patipukur.
