Maulana Azad Medical College

Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) is a public medical college located in New Delhi, India, affiliated with the University of Delhi. It is named after Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, an Indian freedom fighter and the country's first education minister. The college traces its origins to plans made in 1936 and 1940 for a medical college near Ramlila Maidan, though these were delayed by World War II. MAMC was formally established in 1958 at the erstwhile Irwin Hospital, and its new buildings were founded in 1959 on the 30-acre site of the old Central Jail. Four hospitals—Lok Nayak Jay Prakash Hospital, GB Pant Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research, Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, and Guru Nanak Eye Centre—are attached to the college, together offering 2800 beds, 7200 daily outpatient visits, and 47 operation theatres. The college trains 290 undergraduate and 245 postgraduate students annually, supported by 426 faculty members and 810 resident doctors. It offers MBBS, BDS, MD, MS, and super-specialty degrees such as MCh and DM. In 2024, MAMC was ranked 24th among Indian medical colleges by NIRF, 8th by Outlook India among government medical colleges, and 5th by India Today. The campus also contains heritage sites, including the old Central Jail building and the grave of poet Momin.
