INSTITUTE OF TEACHING AND RESEARCH IN AYURVEDA

The Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda (ITRA), located in Jamnagar, Gujarat, India, was founded in 1967. It shares a joint campus with an Institute of National Importance, a status it was declared to hold in 2020. The origins of ITRA trace back to 1940, when the royal family of Nawanagar State established the Shri Gulabkunverba Ayurveda Society, which later founded Shri Gulabkunverba Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya, India's first Ayurveda college, in 1946. Subsequent developments included the founding of the Central Institute for Research in Indigenous System of Medicine in 1952 and the Centre for PG Studies and Research in Ayurveda in 1956. These were integrated in 1963 to form the Institute for Ayurvedic Studies and Research, which was superseded by the Gujarat Ayurved University in 1967. In 2020, ITRA was established as an autonomous institute, absorbing all existing colleges on the campus, including the Indian Institute of Ayurvedic Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Maharshi Patanjali Institute for Yoga Naturopathy Education and Research. ITRA has 12 departments, three clinical laboratories, and three research laboratories, with about 50 acres allocated for college campuses and another 50 acres for a botanical garden. It publishes the quarterly journal Ayu, started in 1964.
