KERALA UNIVERSITY OF HEALTH AND ALLIED SCIENCES

Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) is a state university situated in Thrissur, Kerala, India. It was established through the Kerala University of Health Sciences Act, 2010, with the aim of ensuring proper and systematic instruction, teaching, training, and research, and to bring uniformity to academic programmes in medical and allied subjects across Kerala. The university affiliates all colleges and institutions in the state that provide professional healthcare education, and by the mid-2020s had around 382 affiliated institutions across nine disciplines: medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, Ayurveda, homoeopathy, Siddha, Unani, and allied health sciences. It enrolls more than 100,000 students annually. The Governor of Kerala serves as the University Chancellor, while the Minister for Health and Family Welfare serves as Pro-Chancellor. Before KUHS was formed, medical and para-medical colleges were affiliated with various universities such as the University of Kerala, Mahatma Gandhi University, Calicut University, Kannur University, Cochin University of Science and Technology, and Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit. The university's territorial jurisdiction covers the whole state of Kerala. The vice-chancellor, appointed by the Chancellor, serves as the academic and executive head; Mohanan Kunnummal was reappointed to this role in October 2024. Affiliated colleges are categorized as autonomous or non-autonomous, and further divided into government, private aided, and private unaided institutions.
