INDIAN MARITIME UNIVERSITY, MUMBAI PORT
The Indian Maritime University (IMU) is a public central university operating under India's Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. It serves as the national institution for maritime education, commercial shipping, marine engineering, and maritime administration, and is considered India's leading institute for training merchant navy officers. IMU was established by the Indian Maritime University Act 2008, on 14 November 2008, bringing together seven pre-existing teaching and research institutes that had operated under the Ministry of Shipping. Among these legacy institutes based in Mumbai were Training Ship Chanakya and the Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Advanced Maritime Studies & Research, along with the Marine Engineering and Research Institute. IMU has all-India jurisdiction, with its headquarters located in Chennai, and operates six campuses across Chennai, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai Port, Navi Mumbai, and Visakhapatnam. Admission to IMU programs is conducted through the IMUCET entrance examination held annually across the country. As of 2025, IMU has 21 affiliated colleges.
