CMJ University

CMJ University, also known as CMJU, is a private university situated in Jorabat, Ri-Bhoi District, Meghalaya, India. It was established in 2009 under the CMJ University Act, 2009, passed by the Meghalaya State Legislature. The university was recognized by the UGC as a state private university under section 2(f) and empowered to award degrees under section 22 of the UGC Act, 1956. It began functioning at its permanent campus in Jorabat after a 2015 High Court order. The university offered faculties including Engineering & Technology, Arts and Crafts, Commerce, Science, Management, Law, Nursing, Pharmacy, Design and Architecture, and Applied Science. However, CMJ University faced serious controversies, including complaints to the UGC about unauthorized off-campus study centres, leading to show cause notices from the Meghalaya Government recommending dissolution for mismanagement and maladministration. Although the High Court initially quashed these notices in 2015, an Enforcement Directorate investigation in December 2024 uncovered that the university had issued around 20,570 fake degrees. Ultimately, the Supreme Court upheld the state's dissolution order on 13 February 2025. Notable alumni include politicians Abdur Rahaman Liton and Ganesh Dhimal.
