GOVT T D MEDICAL COLLEGE ALAPPUZHA

Government T. D. Medical College, Alappuzha is situated in the suburban area of Vandanam, nine kilometres south of Alappuzha town, facing NH 66, in Alappuzha district, Kerala. The initials T.D. stand for Thirumala Devaswom, reflecting its origin under the patronage of the T.D. Temple at Anantha Narayana Puram. Founded by Sri N. V. Prabhu, the college began MBBS classes in August 1963 with 50 students, initially managed by the Kerala Cultural & Educational Society and later by the T.D. Medical College Trust. Due to financial difficulties from capitation fee objections, the Kerala Government took over management in 1967, and the college was fully vested with the Government from 17 October 1972, formalized by Government Order No. G.O.(MS).263/73/HD dated 23 October 1973, making it the fourth Government Medical College in Kerala. Seats for MBBS increased over the years, reaching 150 from 2007-2008. Postgraduate courses in Medicine and Surgery began in 1982-1983, along with paramedical and pharmacy diploma courses. The hospital complex has expanded over decades, with various departments relocated to new blocks at Neerkunnam near Vandanam between 1991 and 2010.
