Asutosh College
Asutosh College was established in 1916 as South Suburban College under the stewardship of educationist Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee, then vice-chancellor of the University of Calcutta. After his death in 1924, the college was renamed Asutosh College. It is a government-aided institution affiliated with the University of Calcutta, situated in Southern Kolkata near Jatin Das Park Metro Station. The college offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses across science subjects such as Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Zoology, and Environmental Science, as well as arts and commerce subjects including Bengali, English, History, and Sociology. In 2002, it became the first college in West Bengal accredited by NAAC, later receiving an A grade with a CGPA of 3.22 in 2016. In 2012, it received the Mother Teresa International Award. Its Centenary Building was inaugurated by former President Pranab Mukherjee in 2015, and the college became the 12th in Kolkata to install a rooftop solar plant. The college has had notable alumni including filmmakers, actors, and academics, and has faced some controversies regarding female student policies.
