Balasaheb Desai College, PATAN
Balasaheb Desai College of Arts and Science was established in 1969 in Patan, located in Satara district, Maharashtra, India. It was founded by Balasaheb Desai (Daulatrao Shripatrao Desai), a prominent politician and social worker who served as home minister, education minister, and cultural minister in the early Maharashtra state government. Desai began his law practice in Patan and later became a key political figure, serving as an MLA from Patan and holding various ministerial posts. As education minister of Maharashtra in 1960, he worked to ensure access to education for children from economically backward families and was instrumental in establishing Shivaji University in Kolhapur in 1962. Building on this commitment to education, he founded Balasaheb Desai College of Arts and Science in Patan in 1969. Desai was widely respected for his work with the poor, particularly after the 1967 Patan earthquake, and was referred to as "Loknete" by journalist Pralhad Keshav Atre. He also contributed to the cooperative movement by establishing a sugar factory in Patan.
