Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) is a multi-campus public university based in Mumbai, India, founded in 1936 by the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work. It was renamed Tata Institute of Social Sciences in 1944 and declared a deemed university by the Government of India in 1964 under the UGC Act. TISS offers post-graduate and doctoral degrees in fields such as Habitat Studies, Management and Labour Studies, Disaster Studies, Development Studies, Education, Gender Studies, Health Studies, Law, Library and Information Management, Media and Cultural Studies, Public Policy, Rural Development, and Social Work. The institute has been involved in field action during disasters like the Partition of India, the Bhopal disaster, and the Uttarakhand floods, and has shaped public policy including labour welfare laws. TISS has campuses in Mumbai, Tuljapur, Hyderabad, and Guwahati, along with centres in Leh and Port Blair. It collaborates academically with institutions such as the University of Chicago, London School of Economics, MIT, Sciences Po, and universities under the Erasmus Mundus program. The institute is governed by a board with representatives from the Government of India, Government of Maharashtra, University of Mumbai, and UGC, and is currently led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Badri Narayan Tiwari.
