School of Arts and Sciences

The Krieger School of Arts and Sciences is the college of arts and sciences at Johns Hopkins University, a private research university based in Baltimore, Maryland. It emerged when the university's original Faculty of Philosophy merged with the School of Engineering in 1967–1968; engineering later separated again in 1979 to form the Whiting School of Engineering. In 1992, alumnus Zanvyl Krieger donated $50 million to the school, leading to it being renamed in his honor. The school offers more than 60 undergraduate majors and minors, over 40 full-time graduate programs, and over 20 part-time graduate programs. Its academic structure includes humanities departments such as Classics, English, History, and the William H. Miller III Department of Philosophy, as well as natural sciences departments including Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics and Astronomy. The school has undergone various changes, such as renaming its Humanities Center to the Department of Comparative Thought and Literature in 2017 and merging its Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences with the School of Medicine's Department of Neuroscience in 2025. Beginning in Fall 2024, undergraduates must fulfill a set of 'Foundational Abilities' distribution requirements to graduate.
