College of Fisheries

College of Fisheries, Raha (COF) is an academic institution located at Raha, Assam, established in 1988 to offer specialized education in fisheries science, particularly for the North Eastern region of India. The plan originated from discussions at the 1982 ICAR Region II Committee Meeting, with a proposal approved in 1985 under a 70:30 funding arrangement between ICAR and the Assam Government. Although the ICAR Accreditation Committee initially suggested starting the program at the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Khanapara, the Government of Assam recommended relocating it to Raha. The college began its academic program in 1987-88 with three lecturers and part-time teachers for supportive subjects, launching a 4-year B.F.Sc. program. The college now offers both undergraduate (B.F.Sc.) and postgraduate (M.F.Sc.) programs in fisheries science, with the B.F.Sc. program including In-Plant Training and Hands-on Training in later semesters. The Department of Aquaculture has conducted training programs and partnered with organizations like NABARD for Biofloc Fish Farming initiatives. The college also hosts educational visits and international delegations, such as one from Tuskegee University, USA. It has a student representative body called the College of Fisheries Students Union (COFSU).
