Midnapore Law College
Midnapore College, founded in 1873, is the oldest college in the Midnapore region of Paschim Medinipur district, West Bengal. Its roots trace back to 1834 as a private school, later becoming a Zilla School in 1840, before it was established as a degree college under the University of Calcutta in 1873. The college became a first-grade science college in 1924 and played a significant role in the Bengal Renaissance and India's freedom movement, with several students becoming martyrs and teachers dismissed for independence-related activities. After India's independence, the college became government-sponsored in 1956 and received UGC recognition in 1957. Its affiliation shifted from Calcutta University to Vidyasagar University in 1985. In 2014-2015, UGC granted it autonomous status, making it only the fourth college in West Bengal to receive this status. The college offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in science and arts, including Tourism & Aviation Management. It has been accredited by NAAC with an A+ grade in 2017 and was ranked 42nd among Indian colleges by NIRF in 2025. The campus spans 13.59 acres and includes hostels, a sky observation centre, and a science research centre.
