GOVERNMENT TIBBI COLLEGE AND HOSPITAL

Government Tibbi College and Hospital, Patna, was established in 1926 as the first Unani medical college founded by the British government in India. A 50,000 rupee grant enabled its creation, with initial enrollment of eleven students, a Unani dispensary, and a library of Tibbi literature. The initiative came from Syed Mohammad Fakhruddin and Ganesh Dutt Singh. Located in Kadamkuan, it was founded alongside the Ayurvedic College. The college became a permanent Government institution on April 10, 1942, with instruction in Urdu and Arabic. It included an outdoor dispensary, library, herbarium, hostel, and museum of indigenous medicines. Hakim Abdul Ahad served as Principal from 1951 to 1970. By the mid-1970s, a 14-member board governed the college. Student protests occurred in 2003 and 2018 over facilities and delayed results. In May 2025, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar laid the foundation for a new building within the Nalanda Medical College and Hospital campus, with a planned 200-bed hospital and 150-student capacity by 2027. The college offers a Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS) degree and postgraduate specializations, and is affiliated with Bihar University of Health Sciences, recognized by the Medical Council of India.
