IIT Gandhinagar was announced in 2008 as one of eight new IITs by India's Ministry of Human Resource Development. It began operations from a temporary campus at Vishwakarma Government Engineering College in Ahmedabad, under the mentorship of IIT Bombay, admitting its first students to BTech programmes in Chemical, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering. It was included in the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2011. The permanent campus land in Palaj, on the banks of the Sabarmati river, was leased from the Government of Gujarat for 99 years at a token rent of one rupee; the institute took possession in August 2012, with classes starting on the new campus around July 2015. IITGN offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes through thirteen departments and seven centres, covering engineering, sciences, and humanities. Undergraduate admissions occur through JOSAA counselling based on JEE-Advanced, with some admissions via Olympiad Camps; MSc admissions use IIT-JAM, except Cognitive Science, which has its own process. NIRF ranked it 36th overall, 25th among engineering institutes, and 39th for research. The 400-acre campus features academic buildings, twelve hostel blocks, dining facilities, sports complexes, a gymnasium, lakes, a swimming pool, and a Central Library, and is India's first 5-star GRIHA LD campus.
