IISER Pune is an autonomous public university founded in 2006, one of the first two IISERs established, along with IISER Kolkata. Its final campus, spanning 98 acres, was completed in 2012, and the first batch of students graduated the same year. The institute offers integrated masters (BS-MS), Masters by Research (MS), integrated doctoral (Int. PhD), and PhD programmes. Admission to BS-MS is exclusively through the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT) from 2024, while PhD admissions require a master's or bachelor's degree along with interviews and a national-level entrance exam such as GATE. Faculty are organized into disciplines including Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Climate Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Mathematics, and Physics, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary research. In the 2020 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, IISER Pune was ranked among the top 800 globally and 10th in India; NIRF ranked it 55th overall and 35th in research in India in 2025. The institute hosts several research centres, including the Centre for Integrative Studies and DBT Centre of Excellence in Epigenetics. Student life includes clubs, the Mimamsa science quiz, a SPIC MACAY sub-chapter, and the annual Karavaan fest. The current Director is Prof. Sunil S. Bhagwat.
