The South India Textile Research Association (SITRA) is a textile research association established in 1956 in Coimbatore, India. It is an industry-sponsored research institute supported by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, and is regarded as one of the best-equipped textile research organisations in the world. Its members include institutions from India, Indonesia, Iran, Nigeria, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bangladesh. The foundation stone was laid on 25 December 1955 by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, and the institute was inaugurated on 13 October 1958 by President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. R. K. Shanmugam Chettiar served as its first chairman, while Kasturi Sreenivasan was Director from 1955 to 1982 and played a key role in developing SITRA. The institute is located on Avinashi Road, Peelamedu, Coimbatore, near the airport, on a campus of about 32.5 acres with 15,000 sq. m of floor space, including testing, electronics, and calibration laboratories, a pilot mill, and a library. It is governed by a Council of Administration representing industry, scientists, and government. SITRA has multiple departments covering textile engineering, chemistry, instrumentation, knitting, and labour research, and it publishes technical journals and industry standards.
