EASTERN INSTITUTE FOR INTEGRATED LEARNING IN MANAGEMENT

EIILM University originated as an institute established in 1995 to provide career-oriented education. In 1999 it began offering a Master of Business Administration course through Visva-Bharati University, later becoming a constituent college of that university. In 2006 it was established as a university under Sikkim State Legislature Act No 4, 2006, sponsored by the Malvika Foundation, and was run by the Rai Foundation. In 2013 several top officials, including the VC, chairman, registrar, and controller of examinations, were arrested for forgery and criminal conspiracy. A UGC fact-finding committee in 2015 found the university had been approved only for its main campus and not authorized to run other study centers; degrees beyond the 2009-14 academic year were declared invalid, while earlier degrees in specific courses were considered valid. The university was found non-functioning since December 2014, and the Sikkim cabinet approved its dissolution on 28 April 2015. Subsequent notices from the UGC and the Sikkim government reaffirmed this conclusion, and a petition by the Malvika Foundation and EIILM University against the state was dismissed by the Sikkim High Court in November 2016.
