Institute of Education

The UCL Institute of Education (IOE) is the faculty of education and society within University College London (UCL), specializing in postgraduate study and research in education. It was founded in 1902 as the London Day Training College under the London County Council, becoming a school of the University of London in 1909 and later renamed the University of London, Institute of Education in 1932. It expanded into secondary teacher training, higher degrees, and research areas such as child development. After the McNair Committee report, it became an Area Training Organisation coordinating around 30 colleges of education. In 1987, it became a school of the University of London again, incorporated by royal charter. The IOE formed a strategic alliance with UCL in 2012, leading to a merger completed in December 2014. It is the largest education research body in the UK, with over 700 doctoral research students, about 4,000 Master's students, and 1,200 PGCE trainees. The IOE has been ranked first in the world for education in the QS World University Rankings every year since 2014, and leads the UK Centre for Global Higher Education alongside partner universities.
