M M JOSHI EYE INSTITUTE
M. M. Joshi Eye Institute, also known as Padma Nayanalaya, is a 75-bedded super-specialty eye hospital located in Hubli and Dharwad, Karnataka, and is described as the largest institution of its kind in the region. It was founded in 1967 by Dr. Mahipathi Madhwacharya Joshi, an Indian ophthalmologist who was the first post graduate private practitioner in ophthalmology in Karnataka. Over the years, the institute has expanded into a two-location super specialty hospital group and now functions as a post graduate institute in ophthalmology. Under its aegis, Dr. Joshi has organized free eye camps and Continuing Medical Education programs. He is also reported to have established the first eye bank in Karnataka and initiated the state's first eye donation program. The institute's founder was a co-founder of the Karnataka Ophthalmic Society, established in 1980, which later instituted the annual Dr. M.M. Joshi Best Paper Award in his honor to recognize innovations in ophthalmology. Dr. Joshi received several honors for his work, including the Rajyotsava Prashasti in 1989 and the Padma Shri in 2016.
