Mohammad Ali Jauhar University, Rampur
Mohammad Ali Jauhar University is a private university located in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, India, established in 2006 by the Mohammad Ali Jauhar Trust. It is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and was granted university status in 2012. On 28 May 2013, it received minority status from the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI). The university originated from a proposal by Azam Khan for a state-owned Urdu university, which faced political setbacks before evolving into a privately owned institution. It was formally inaugurated on 18 September 2012 by Mulayam Singh Yadav, founder of the Samajwadi Party, with Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav in attendance. The university offers programs through several faculties, including engineering, medical sciences, paramedical science, humanities, science, agriculture, and law. Its land acquisition has been controversial; in 2023 the Uttar Pradesh government cancelled the university's land lease, citing violations of lease conditions. The Allahabad High Court upheld this termination in March 2024, and the Supreme Court of India refused to overturn the ruling in October 2024. The university's buildings remain under construction.
