MADURA COLLEGE

The Madura College, established in 1856, is one of the oldest academic institutions in Madurai, India. It began as a Zilla School in 1856, an outcome of Wood's despatch of 1854. In 1880, a college department was added under the affiliation of the University of Madras. Both the School and College departments were taken over by the 'Madura Native School Committee', which renamed itself the 'Madura Committee' in 1889. Today, the college functions as an autonomous arts and science institution affiliated to the Madurai Kamaraj University, offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. It has been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council with an 'A' Grade, having a CGPA of 3.15 out of 4. The college also runs several extension and outreach activities, including the National Service Scheme, National Cadet Corps, Youth Red Cross, Red Ribbon Club, Adult Education and Extension Programme, and Physical Education. Notable alumni include Sri T. S. Rajam, former President of the Madras Music Academy, and Shri Jana Krishnamurthi.
